Thanks for asking. Pocahontas is doing well.

WTF? You might ask.

Well, holySmith! chose the name holySmith! because Al Gore, or whichever toolbox invented the Internet, decided to use JohnSmith.com and JonSmith.com as his first two examples of what a domain name is. That means everyone with the name Jo(h)n Smith automatically got screwed out of a domain name right out of the gate.

Sure it’s cool when we get credit card offers in the mail, the card already has our name on it. It’s also neat that we are the first name you see when you see on your new phone (until you peel that plastic layer off that shows you the example display). Yes it’s funny when people meet you for the first time and they say stuff like “Is that your REAL name?” or “Yeah, right!” or “Do you build toilets?”

And of course, they always think they are the first to say “So how is Pocahontas these days, anyway?”

Actually, once you look your Jo(h)n Smith Complex in the eyes and embrace it, it quickly becomes one of the greatest experiences in your life. I literally get excited at the moment just before someone introduces me to someone else either at work or as friends. As soon as they say, “and this is Jon Smith” you see the look of disbelief on the other person’s face when they realize that they actually just met someone named Jo(h)n Smith. The novelty never wears off for me, nor should it for you.

That’s why holySmith! has started the Facebook group: “Guys named Jo(h)n Smith who love being asked how Pocahontas is doing“. The group is open to all those who share the name (and variations of it) as well as to all those who know a guy with that name. . .in other words, you are reading this. . .I know who you are. . .I know your IP address. . .I have Google Analytics. . .you have no excuses!

So check out the group and the new holySmith! Facebook page. If you’re crafty, maybe you can find the real me on Facebook! Good luck with that search.

I have built and optimized websites for several years now and I can tell you firsthand that the longer people keep old crappy browsers around, the harder it is for webmasters to make better websites, the harder it is for websites to be more secure, and the harder it is to make sites look the same way for all who view them.

The fact is that Internet Explorer 6 is old technology. Internet Explorer 7 is just about to be old technology because Internet Explorer 8 is in beta right now, which means it will be released soon.

The time has come to update that old crapfest of a browser you are using!

Also, for all of you loyal holySmith! readers who who do not happen to live and work on the Internet all day, there are lots of other great browsers that you can use as well. Internet Explorer is not the only gig in town. Let’s see, there’s Firefox (if you love to add tons of plugins that make browsing more fun), Google Chrome (if you like clean, simple, and efficient/fast, then try Chrome), Safari (if you want to see what all the Mac groupies have been talking about), Opera (which is really best for mobile phone browsers, but it has some fun crap, too). . .Those are the main ones, anyway.

The bottom line is that it is time to upgrade. People who keep IE6 in use are essentially driving up the cost of website development and causing unnecessary stress because after you finish the painstaking process of getting a site to look right in the main (updated) browsers, you get an email from some dipstick complaining that he can’t log in to your site because he is using IE6. It’s kind of like getting pissed off at your favorite music group for not putting out their latest release on 8-Track or raising holy hell at the Blockbuster because they don’t have Madagascar II for rental on BetaMax.

The “Jump” video is probably one of the most vivid memories of my childhood and VH was the coolest band alive when I was in grade four, circa 1984, which just happens to be the name of the album upon which one would find the song “Jump”. . .and don’t forget “Panama”, “Hot for Teacher”, “I’ll Wait”, “House of Pain”, and others. It’s a classic. Even the cover art rules.

Anyway, the reason I mention this is because MTV just went ape shit and dumped like 16,000 music videos on their site — and you can find most of the classics of MTV music video lore, I’m sure. This was literally the first search I did, so please join me over at the MTV website for nice ride down horrible music video memory lane!
