El Penasco Mexican Kitchen Tempe, AZ

I haven’t updated the Eat Here! section of the blog in quite some time, but now I have a real reason to do so. El Penasco (there is a thingy over the ‘n’ but I am too lazy to find the ASCII code for the symbol) is a Mexican Kitchen located on the southeast corner of Mill and Broadway in Tempe. El Gammy, a real, live Mexican-American, has recently dubbed this place the best Mexican food in the Phoenix area, except for his mom’s food of course.

Bottom line…this is some fantastic Mexican food. They have this cream cheese sauce that is out of this world good. They also make fresh tortillas and chips, with a pretty standard red salsa as well as a rather tasty lime salsa. I would go and fill up on those twice a day…they are THAT DAMN GOOD.

This is the new must-have Mexican food for when you come into town to visit holySmith!. Fair warning, the second time I went there, I got the El Penasco Burro (with the aforementioned cream cheese sauce). It gave me a serious hot flash at 2:30 in the morning after eating there, then it threw me into a nervous breakdown (seriously). Well, I suppose that could have been more of the pent up stress of the last six months of life (new baby, new home, lots of work stress, etc). Either way, that burro kicked my ass, but it was so good, I have been back since to do it again (it gets easier to deal with each time).

They even have good iced tea, which is a prerequisite for me anymore. I can’t rave enough about the place. If you are one of the local holySmith! readers, you simply have to go try this place. Call me if you go!
