Syd Barret the Crazy Ferret

Our ferret Syd (named after Syd Barret from Pink Floyd, of course), died on Saturday. Needless to say, it wasn’t the best weekend around our house. He had been dealing with an adrenal gland disease along with the tumors and related complications that come with it (it’s a fairly common disease for ferrets).

Sadie, our last surviving ferret, is still a bit sad and she keeps looking for Syd in his usual napping spot in our closet. holySmith! The Boy also keeps asking where Syd is, and despite being open and honest about Syd’s death, his 2.5-year-old mind doesn’t seem to grasp the finality of it all just yet, which makes it kinda sad.

After having him for almost seven years, it was pretty tough to see him go, but on the positive side, he was a great ferret – lots of personality, knew how to poop in his litter box, always entertaining – and he gave us a lot of great memories indeed.

I have quite an archive of video of the ferrets, so I probably could do quite the montage. Maybe I will do one with the Floyd track “Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict” – I trust you’ve heard this. If not, see me for a copy of Ummagumma ASAP.
